Awhileは副詞で英語の意味は、

“for a short time or period”です。

訳すと、「しばらく、少しの間、短時間」

Looks like this project will take awhile.

Would you like to stay awhile?

A whileは名詞句です。

英語の説明は、“as the object of a preposition, the noun phrase 「a while」is used.”

前置詞句・名詞句としては a while. この場合でもawhileを使うのもある様ですが、formal writingの場合はprepositional phraseのobjectとして a whileの方が良いです。

We stayed for a while.

The party died down after a while.
