Far be it from meの意味

Far be it from meの意味は・訳は、和英辞典によると、

「~しようなどという気持ちは(私には)全くない、~するつもりは毛頭ない」となっています。

次の例文と訳がありました。

Far be it from me to find fault with your friends.
「あなたの友達のあら探しをするつもりは毛頭ない。」

この様な訳、熟語の理解は間違っていると思います。

McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbsによると、

Far be it from meの英語の意味は、

“it is not really my place to do something” です。

そして使い方は、always followed by “but,” です。

この熟語にシンプルで奇麗な日本語直訳はないと思いますが、

「私が言う立場ではないけど… 」みたいな感じになります。

「する気持ち」とか「するつもり」の意味は英語の意味にはありません。

Mastering the American Accent

例えば、

Far be it from me to tell you how to live your life, but you should move back to Kansas.

「私があなたに人生をどうやって生きるか言う立場じゃないけど、」みたいな感じです。

それと、大事なポイントが”but,”です。

McGraw-Hill辞典によると、”always followed by ‘but,’ ”です。

まあ、almost alwaysと考えても良いと思いますが。

“But”が付くので、例えば、何かを「言う・する」立場ではないと言っても、結局「言う・する」事になります。

Practical English Usage

なので、Cambridge Idioms Dictionaryによると、

“far be it from me”は、

“something that you say when you are giving advice or criticizing someone and you want to seem polite “です。

つまり、マナー上、人にアドバイス・批判する前に少し和らげる熟語です。

他の辞書では次の意味もありました。

“it’s not my place to say so”

“it’s not my place to judge”

“I would not presume to “

一応、McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbsの意味と大体同じですね。

ですから、

Far be it from me to tell you what to do, but I think you should go apologize.

「私があなたにどうしろと言う立場ではないが、あなたは謝るべきだ。」みたいな感じになります。
