Continualとcontinuousの違いは微妙です。

 

Continualが「継続的に頻繁に発生すること」で、continuousが「停止することなく継続的起こってる事・時間的／空間的に切り目なく続く」等の説明がよくありますが、この様なルールはcontinuous/continualのいろんな意味を考えると、半分正解で半分間違っています。

 

Continualの１つの意味は、

“happening without interruption or cessation; continuous in time.”

 

これだと、continualはcontinuousとほぼ同じ「継続的・連続的」の様な意味になります。

 

Continualの意味が

 

“of regular or frequent recurrence; often repeated; very frequent”

となると、continuousと意味が違います。

 

Due to the continual train departures, the crew had a hard time working on the tracks.

 

Continuousの１つの意味は、

“uninterrupted in time; without cessation”

 

She was bothered by his continuous snoring at night.

 

 

しかし、continuousには

“being in immediate connection or spatial relationship”

の意味もあります。

 

There was a continuous row of factories.

 

Rowとrowが繋がってないので、ある意味ではuninterrupted/without cessationではないですね。

空間的に切り目はありますから。

 

Dictionary. comにはこの”Usage note”が書いてあります。

 

“Although usage guides generally advise that CONTINUAL may be used only to mean “intermittent” and CONTINUOUS only to mean “uninterrupted,” the words are used interchangeably in all kinds of speech and writing with no distinction in meaning. The adverbs CONTINUALLY and CONTINUOUSLY are also used interchangeably.”

 

The actor’s life is under continual scrutiny.

 

The actor’s life is under continuous scrutiny.

 

意味によって、両方OKと言う事です。

「停止することなく継続的」の様な意味の違いをはっきり伝える場合は、continuousよりuninterruptedを使った方が良いです。

 

そして「継続的に頻繁に発生すること」の意味だと、continualよりintermittentの方がお勧めです。
