Comprised ofとcomposed ofの違い

最初に、Compriseとcomposeの違いの復習です。

 

Compriseはto contain/to includeでcomposeはto make upでしたね。

 

では、composed ofはmade up ofの意味です。

 

The class was composed of 23 students, 4 dogs, and a ferret.

 

しかし、comprised ofはどうでしょう？

 

Contained of?? 何か変ですね。

 

The school contained of/included of 50 classrooms. 変ですね。

 

The school was comprised of 50 classrooms. 変です。

 

 
 

Be comprised ofは熟語としてありますが、文法的に避けた方が良いと言われています。

 

The school was composed of 50 classrooms. はOKですね。

Compriseとcomposeの使い方は、ネイティブの人でも間違う事があると思います。


 

Compriseはto contain/to includeの意味です。

 

Japan comprises 47 prefectures.

 

Composeはto make upの意味です。

 

Forty-seven prefectures compose Japan.

 

ですから、

 

Japan composes 47 prefectures. は間違っていますね。

 

Forty-seven prefectures comprise Japan. もダメです。

使い分け, 違い

Cannotとcan not（can’t）の違い

Cannotとcan notの違いはないです。両方とも使えます。

 

アメリカ英語ではcannotの方がよく使われるので、こっちを使うのがスタンダードです。

 

Can notは間違っている。Cannotではなければダメだ！等たまに書いてありますが、文法的には、両方OKなはずです。
 
 

 

しかし、通常はcannotを使いましょう。

 

Can notはnotを特別に強調する時に使えます。

 

例えば、

 

No! You can not park your car in the fountain!

 

おまけにcan’tについてです。

 

Can’tはもちろんcannot/can’tのshort formですよね。

 

意味は同じですが、can’tはinformalなスタイルなので、formal writingで使うのは避けましょう。

 

 

ですから、formal writingでは、can’tではなくてcannotです。

Believeとbelieve inの違い

Believeとbelieve inは両方「信じる」の意味なのですが、その「信じる」の意味が違います。

 

Believeが単に「信じる」だと、believe inはもっと「何かの善良に関して、堅固な信念がある」な感じです。

 

I believe you. 　意味：あなたが言った事を信じる。

 

I believe in you. 　意味：あなたを信頼する。あなたの能力を信頼する。

 

I believe in God. 　意味：神の存在を信じる。

 

ですから、例えばスポーツ選手がインタビューで、自分（の能力・実力）を信じている。と言う時は、どちらが正しいでしょう？

 

I believe myself.

 

それとも

 

I believe in myself.

 

 
正しいのは、I believe in myself. ですね。I believe myself.　だと、自分が言った事を自分で信じる…の様な感じで、変な表現になってしまいます。
