Aircraftとairplane/planeは日本語の訳だと両方「飛行機」になってしまうかもしれません。
しかし、aircraftの意味は、
「航空機」です。
文章によって「飛行機」と訳した方が良い事もあり、同じ意味で使われるのも多いですが、意味の違いはこれです。
航空機 ＝ 「人が乗って空中を飛行できる乗り物。飛行機、グライダー。気球、飛行船など」
Aircraftとは英語では、
“any machine supported for flight in the air by buoyancy or by the dynamic action of air on its surfaces.”
Airplane/planeとは、「飛行機」です。
“A heavier-than-air powered flying vehicle with fixed wings and driven by propellers, jet propulsion, etc.”
あるdefinitionでは、グライダー・ヘリコプター等もairplaneとなりますが、一般的には翼と推進力がある飛ぶ機械の事です。
