Capitalの名詞の意味は、
「首都、州都、中心地、大文字、資本、資産、資本金、元金、源泉」等です。
形容詞の意味は、
「主要な、重要な、資本の、素晴らしい、死刑に値する、ひどい、重大な、致命的な」等です。
名詞の「首都、州都」の意味ですと、capitalとは場所(city)の意味です。
“city or town that is the official seat of government”
Washington D.C. is the capital of the U.S.
“city regarded as being of special eminence in some field or activity”
New York is the financial capital of the world.
Capitolとはアメリカの国会議事堂か州議事堂です。
英語の意味は、
- the building in Washington, D.C. used Congress
- building occupied by state legislature
要は、capitolはbuildingです。
古代ローマの神殿の意味もありますが、普通は（米国）議事堂の意味です。
国会議事堂は大文字のCapitolで、州議事堂は小文字のcapitolです。州議事堂でも、大文字で書くのもありますが。例、The Texas State Capitol.
