Funny businessの意味

Funny businessは３つの意味があります。

 

１つの意味は、

“improper or unethical conduct, as deception or trickery”

“dishonest or illegal activities”

です。

 

訳すと、

「いかがわしい行動」
「いんちき」

ですね。

 

例えば、

The judge put everyone on notice that there would be no funny business in his courtroom.
 

 

他の意味は、

“foolish behavior; shenanigans”です。

 

訳すと、

「愚かな行動」

「馬鹿な振る舞い」です。

 

例えば、

The TV program was full of funny business, but it wasn’t particularly funny.

 

３つ目の意味は、

”lecherous behavior”
“amorous behavior”です。

 

例えば、

The father warned his teenage daughter’s boyfriend, “Bring her home by 9.   And no funny business!”

Catch up with、catch up on、catch up toの違い

Catch up onの意味は、

 

“to bring or get up to date” です。

I need to catch up on my reading this weekend.

 

訳すと、「（仕事等の）遅れを取り戻す」ですね。

 

Catch up withの意味は、

“To come up to or overtake something or someone” です。

 

Catch up toも同じ様な感じで使えます。

 

At this pace, he will catch up with the leader.

At this pace, he will catch up to the leader.

 

訳すと、「追いつく」です。

 

Catch up withは他に、「欠席により出来なかった仕事を後から調整する」の訳もあります。

 

この意味ですと、catch up onの「（仕事等の）遅れを取り戻す」と似た様な使い方ですね。
 
 

 
 

ですから、この意味の場合は両方使えます。

しかし、恐らくwithの方が標準だと思います。

Keep you postedの意味 (keep someone posted)

Keep you postedの意味は、

“keep someone informed (of the latest developments/news), update, keep up to date, “

“to make sure that someone always knows what is happening”

“to make sure you know what is happening”

です。

 

The lawyer kept us posted about our lawsuit.

The worker kept the manager posted about the inventory.

 

訳すと、

「随時連絡します。」

「逐次連絡をします。」

「最新の情報を逐一知らせる。」

な感じですね。

 

少しinformalな表現ですが、ビジネス英会話では良く使われます。ビジネスメールでも使えます。

 

“I’ll keep you posted about the ad campaign.”

“Please keep us posted about the contract negotiations.”

意味, 違い

Nobody’s businessとlike nobody’s businessの違い・意味

Nobody’s businessとは、 none of one’s business/none of your businessの意味です。None of one’s businessのちょっとinformalなバリエーションですかね。

 

「関係ない」みたいな訳になります。

 

None of one’s businessの表現では、通常は “one’s” より “my/your/his/her/our/their” を使います。

 

none of your business 「あなたには関係ない」

none of his business 「彼には関係ない」

 

None of one’s businessの英語での意味は、

“not of one’s/your concern” , “do not interest yourself in matters that do no involve you”等です。

 


 
 
一方、like nobody’s businessの意味は「関係ない」と全然関係ないです。

Likeを付けるだけで、完全に意味が変わります。

 

Like nobody’s businessの１つの意味は、

“In an extreme manner, rapidly, excessively, like crazy” です。

「ものすごい勢いで、ものすごく、狂気のように、大きな速度、努力、または、強度を伴って、猛烈に、」等の意味です。

 

He spends money like nobody’s business.

それは、He spends money rapidly/excessively/like crazy.の意味です。

 

しかし、”like nobody’s business”にはもう１つの　“Very well, very much, very easily”の意味があります。

「とても上手に、とても（上手だから）楽に・簡単に」等の訳になります。

 

He can sing that song like nobody’s business.

He can sing that song very well. の意味です。「彼はとても上手にあの歌を歌えます。」みたいな感じですね。

 
 

 
 

因に、”like nobody’s business”はinformalな表現ですので、ビジネスレポート等では通常使いません。
