Layとlieには様々な意味と使い方がありますが、下記は「横たわる、横になる、置く」等の意味の説明です。

 



 

Layは目的語（直接目的語）が必要です。Lieは自動詞です。

 

She laid the plates out on the table.

platesが目的語ですね。Platesをlayした。

 

I laid myself down on the sofa.

myselfが目的語。この表現では、私(subject)が私を(direct object)をsofaにlayした。

 

 

Lieは自動詞ですから目的語は使いません。

 

The plates lie on the table.

 

I am lying on the sofa. （am lyingはlieの現在進行形。）

 

A river lies beneath the cliff.
