In timeとon timeの使い方は色々ありますが（「やがて、後に、調子が合って、後払い、分割払い」等）、この説明は一般的な使い方についてです。

 



 

In timeの意味は、

“before a time limit expires; early enough; enough time to spare; before the last moment”

「間に合って、遅れずに」

just in timeは「ちょうど間に合って」

例えば、He would have died if the ambulance hadn’t arrived in time.

 

 

On timeの意味は、

“according to schedule; punctual; at the planned time; neither late nor early”

「時間どおりに、定刻」

例えば、The plane departed on time.

 

文章によって両方の表現を使える場合もありますが、意味が変わります。

 

The traffic was bad, but we arrived in time for dinner.

意味　Traffic was bad but 間に合って着いた。

 

The traffic was bad, but we arrived on time for dinner.

意味　Traffic was bad but時間通りに着いた。
