Ashamedとembarrassedの違い

たまにashamedとembarrassedは、「恥ずかしい」に似たような和訳に両方なっています。

 

しかし、英語ではashamedとembarrassedのニュアンスは違います。

 

Embarrassedと言うと、恥ずかしい様な感じで大丈夫だと思います。

 

例えば、成績が悪いから恥ずかしい等は、通常embarrassedのレベルになります。

 

てれくさい、人目につきたくない等もembarrassedだけのレベルです。

 

 

一方、Ashamedは単に恥ずかしいというレベルではありません。

 

Ashamedとは、罪の意識、後悔、恥の様な意味です。

The nation was ashamed of its war crimes.

ですから、ashamedは何か悪い事をしてしまって感じる事で、モラル的な意味があります。

Practiceとpractise の違い

イギリス英語では、practiceは名詞でpractiseは動詞として使います。

 


 

Practiceの使い方（名詞）の例は、

 

The young doctor dreamed of opening his own private practice.

 

Do we still have basketball practice at 2pm tomorrow?

 

 

Practise（動詞）の例は、

 

They practise piano everyday.

 

The monks practise meditation several times a day.

 

 

アメリカ英語では、practice を動詞・名詞でも使えます。

 

I have basketball practice. （名詞）

 

I practice basketball everyday.　（動詞）

 

 

 
 

ですから、イギリス英語・アメリカ英語で間違っている使い方は、practiseを名詞として使ってしまう事です。

 

イギリス・アメリカ英語で間違った例は、

 

I have basketball practise.

Somedayとsome dayの違い

 

今日の英語勉強は、somedayとsome dayの違いです。

和英・英和辞書でたまに書き換え可能と書いてありますが、英語では、somedayとsome dayの違いはあります。書き換え可能とは半分正しいです。

 

Somedayとは、将来のある不特定の時間です。Somedayは不特定の時間でsome dayは不特定の日です。

 

例えば、

 

We see the hero as someday becoming the symbol of hope for the entire country.

 

Let’s go to that restaurant someday.

 

Someday my time will come.

 

(Someday = some time in the future)

 

Some dayは不特定の一日です。不特定でも特定の一日です。A specific day.

 

We ate at that restaurant some day last month.

 

Let’s reschedule your interview to some day next week.

 

(some day = some specific day)

 

 
ですから、somedayをsome dayに書き換えるのは文によって可能でも、その逆は出来ません。

Outdoorとoutdoorsの使い方・違い

Outdoorとoutdoorsの使い方は、indoorとindoorsの使い方とほぼ同じです。

 

 

Outdoorは形容詞として使うので、例えば、

 

Tennis practice was held on the outdoor courts yesterday.

 

My neighbor’s cat is an outdoor cat.

 

 

Outdoorsは副詞として使います。

 

Would you like to eat outdoors on the deck since the weather’s nice?

 

Does anyone play table tennis outdoors?

 

 

 
そして、indoorsとちょと違ってoutdoorsは名詞としても使えます。

 

I love the great outdoors!
