Crush itの意味

Crush itとは、knock (it) out of the parkと同じ様な意味です。

Crushはknockの様にhit really hardなので、野球ではballをhit really hardは良い事・成功した事になります。
 
（これは大分適当な説明になってしまいましたね。すみません。野球の例のもうちょっとましな説明は、knock (it) out of the parkをご覧下さい。）
 
ですから熟語の意味は、

“to do very well”

“create big success”等

です。
 
 



 

 
 
ビジネスでも使われるスラング・熟語です。

例えば、株式会社が決算発表でアナリストの予想をはるかに上回った場合、

“Apple’s earnings report: They crushed it again”等の記事がよくあります。

これは、Apple社の四半期決算が予想以上に好調だと言う事です。

スラングで他の（全く違う）意味もありますが、ビジネス英会話ではこの様な意味で普通に使われます。

Knock (it) out of the parkの意味

Knock (it) out of the parkとは、ビジネス英会話でも使える野球からの熟語・スラングです。

Parkとはbaseball field. 　Itはボール(baseball)です。　Knockはhitしたことです。

ですから、ホームランを打った事です。現在形だと打つ事ですね。

 



 

ホームランを打ったら、良くやった！みたいな感じで、

意味としは（現在形だと）、

“Do a great job.”

“Do a stellar job” etc. となります。

 

 

例えば、

Your presentation this morning was excellent. You really knocked it out of the park!

You knocked that presentation out of the park! That was great!

 

何かやった事を「良くやった」と褒める表現なので、通常は過去形で使います。

Go out of townの意味

Go out of townのout of townの意味は「別の町・市」です。「都市の周辺にある地域・市外」の意味ではありません。

 


 

ですから、直訳の「町を出て行く」より「他の町・市に行く」の方が日本語では良いですね。

 

しかし、英語で考えると、go out of townは文字通りにout of townにgoすることです。

 

他の町でなくても、遠い場所の山、砂漠、海等でも文字通りにout of townになります。

 

 
日常的な例ですと、

 

Mr. Aが新宿い住んでいるとして、埼玉県の大宮に行ったら、He went out of town. 　He is out of town.とは言えません。埼玉県の大宮は首都圏の周辺ですから。

 

しかし、Aさんが大阪に行ったら、He went out of town. He is out of town.と言えます。

 

大阪に行った理由はこの表現を使う時には関係ありません。出張でも旅行でも、out of townはout of townです。

 

ビスネス英会話で良く使われる表現ですね。

 

(on the telephone)

Mr. B: May I schedule a meeting with Ms. C for next Tuesday?

Ms D: I’m sorry. Ms.C will be out of town next Tuesday.

Apple to appleの意味

 

Apple to apple又はapples to applesはcompare apple to apple/compare apples to applesの熟語の短縮バージョンです。


 

Compare apples to applesとは、リンゴはリンゴと比較しなければいけない、意味がない、と言う事です。

 

同じあるいは似た性質を持っている物を比べないと、比較する意味がない、と言う事ですね。

 

例えば、このリンゴはあのリンゴより大きい等の比較は意味があります。しかし、このリンゴの美味しさとガソリンの価格を比べても意味がないです！そもそも論理的に比べられないですね。

 

ビジネス英語でこの熟語はよく使います。商品やサービスを比べる時にapples to applesではなければいけないとか言います。

 

You can’t compare company ABC’s service A to company XYZ’s service B. Service A is a premium service, and service B is an entry level service. You have to compare apples to apples.
