In timeとon timeの使い方・違い

In timeとon timeの使い方は色々ありますが（「やがて、後に、調子が合って、後払い、分割払い」等）、この説明は一般的な使い方についてです。

 



 

In timeの意味は、

“before a time limit expires; early enough; enough time to spare; before the last moment”

「間に合って、遅れずに」

just in timeは「ちょうど間に合って」

例えば、He would have died if the ambulance hadn’t arrived in time.

 

 

On timeの意味は、

“according to schedule; punctual; at the planned time; neither late nor early”

「時間どおりに、定刻」

例えば、The plane departed on time.

 

文章によって両方の表現を使える場合もありますが、意味が変わります。

 

The traffic was bad, but we arrived in time for dinner.

意味　Traffic was bad but 間に合って着いた。

 

The traffic was bad, but we arrived on time for dinner.

意味　Traffic was bad but時間通りに着いた。

Cheapとinexpensiveの違い

Cheapとinexpensiveは類義語で「安い」と言う意味でよく使われますが、cheapは「安っぽい」的な感じもある事があります。

Inexpensiveとは、

“not expensive; not high in price.”

高くない、ですね。

 



 

Cheapは、

“costing very little; low in price; inexpensive”の意味もありますが、

“of little account; of small value; shoddy..”等の意味もあるので、

“cheap now usually suggests shoddiness, inferiority, showy imitation, complete unworthiness, etc.”

 

Inexpensiveは、価格が低いの意味を強調して、cheapは価格と質も低いと言う意味にもなります。

 

 

もちろん時には、cheapはただ安いの意味でも使います。

This ticket was cheap!

このチケットは安かった！みたいな事で、品質がどうかとかではないです。

 

会話又は文章のコンテックストによって意味が変わりますから、必ずcheap = bad quality　と言う事ではありません。

しかし、その意味もありますので使い方を気を付けた方が良いですね。特にビジネス等では。

 

因に、cheapは「安い、安っぽい」の他の意味も色々あります。

Historicとhistoricalの違い

Historicの意味は、

something important, significant, or influential in history.

 



 

訳すと、「歴史に残る、歴史上重要な、歴史的に有名な」等。

 

 

Historicalの意味は、

of or relating to history; of or relating to the past;

refers to anything in the past.

 

訳すと、「歴史の、歴史上の、歴史上に起こった、歴史に基づく」等。

 

例えば、

 

Historical documents

意味　Documents from the past.

 

Historic documents

意味　Documents that are important in history.

Towardとtowardsの違い

Towardとtowardsの違いはありません。

両方同じ意味です。違いはスペリングだけです。


アメリカ・カナダ英語では、towardの方がよく使われています。

このグラフを見るとはっきりしていますね。

towardvstowards

一方、towardsはイギリス・オーストラリア英語でtowardより使われているらしいです。

文法的には、どっちでも正しいのですが、アメリカ人と話す時はtowardで、イギリス人とはtowardsと使う分けても良いですね。

あるアメリカ人にとって、

The cat ran towards the mouse.

は間違っている様に聞こえる可能性があります。

ですから、

The cat ran toward the mouse.  

 

まあ、最終的にはどっちでもいいです。
