Compared toとcompared withは両方「比べて、比べると」の様な訳になりますね。

「類似・相違を比較する」等の訳ですが、微妙に違う使い方がいくつかあります。

 

まずは、似ていない物の類似を比較するには、compare to.

The football game was compared to a chess match.

 

似た様な物の相違を比較するには、compared with.

London may be compared with New York City.

 

ですから、古代ローマに似ていない現在のニューヨークは、

New York has been compared to ancient Rome.

 

この「ルール・ガイドライン」のもっと簡単なバリエーションで、

似ていない物を比較するには、compare to.
似た様な物を比較するには、compared with.

という使い方もあります。

類似を強調する場合は、compared to.

Dr. Smith compared his research on child development to Dr. Johnson’s research on child education.

 

類似and/or相違を比較する場合は、compared with.

The runner’s time was 11.3 seconds compared with 11.5 seconds for his rival.
