Go out of townのout of townの意味は「別の町・市」です。「都市の周辺にある地域・市外」の意味ではありません。

 

 

ですから、直訳の「町を出て行く」より「他の町・市に行く」の方が日本語では良いですね。

 

しかし、英語で考えると、go out of townは文字通りにout of townにgoすることです。

 

他の町でなくても、遠い場所の山、砂漠、海等でも文字通りにout of townになります。

 

 
日常的な例ですと、

 

Mr. Aが新宿い住んでいるとして、埼玉県の大宮に行ったら、He went out of town. 　He is out of town.とは言えません。埼玉県の大宮は首都圏の周辺ですから。

 

しかし、Aさんが大阪に行ったら、He went out of town. He is out of town.と言えます。

 

大阪に行った理由はこの表現を使う時には関係ありません。出張でも旅行でも、out of townはout of townです。

 

ビスネス英会話で良く使われる表現ですね。

Mr. B: May I schedule a meeting with Ms. C for next Tuesday?

Ms D: I’m sorry. Ms.C will be out of town next Tuesday.
